Watch drum performance at the Drum Tower of Beijing



The Drum Tower of Beijing also known as Gulou in Chinese, is located at the junction of Dongdajie and Di'anmen Street in Beijing. The Drum Tower was built in 1272 during the reign of Kublai Khan. It is a two-story building made of wood with a height of 47 metres. In ancient times the upper story of the building housed 24 drums, of which only one survives. In ancient times, the Drum Tower was the time keeping center for the whole city and was equipped with bronze clepsydras (water clocks) and drums that were beaten to mark the hours. Nowadays visitors can climb up to the top of the Drum Tower to watch the drum performance.
