Today's Singapore News

The following are stories that are making the headlines over at Topix Singapore News today, edited by yours truly.

-Orchard Rd sales up: Retail sales in Orchard Road went up, not down, after the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) network in the shopping belt was expanded.
-Singapore bikes easy targets for Malaysian thieves: Malaysian bike-theft gang has apparently been going to the parking lots of some popular shopping malls there to look for two-wheelers of Singaporeans.
-Military relations between Malaysia and Singapore remain strong: Even though both countries were seen now and then at loggerheads, the two armies were quietly conducting bilateral military exercises somewhere in Malaysia.
-CPF scheme refined to help citizens better prepare for retirement: The changes include allowing extended family members and employers to top up a CPF member's Special or Retirement account with cash.
-Filmmaker Oliver Stone to teach classes in Singapore: Singapore students in film and media may soon be able to attend a class taught by three-time Academy Award filmmaker Oliver Stone.
-Tray return system to be revived at some hawker centres: The National Environment Agency (NEA) and Singapore Kindness Movement are looking to reintroduce the tray return scheme at Zion Riverside food centre or Bedok food centre by the end of this year.
-Free sports channel not viable in Singapore: Sportscity, a free-to-air sports channel launched in 2000, was not viable and had to be shut down within two years.
-Top marks for S'pore's IT industry: Singapore is second only to the United States when it comes to training and nurturing information technology talents.
-Don't terminate your policies: The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has urged AIA policyholders not to act hastily to terminate their insurance policies, as queues formed outside AIA's offices on Tuesday.
-AIA clients in Singapore terminating insurance policies: Despite officials assuring that AIA's in the clear, anxious customers in Singapore have begun terminating their policies.
